Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers Of The Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, is now in theaters. How will it fare in tandem with the second weekend of Taylor Swift’s blockbuster The Eras Tour film? According to the current forecasts, the true crime thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro may not reach blockbuster numbers, but it is absolutely capable of holding its own.
Over the summer, expectations surrounding the commercial viability of a three-hour historical drama were blown out when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer opened to a $80 million domestic debut alongside Barbie, which was boosted by “Barbenheimer” double features. According to Deadline, Killers Of The Flower Moon will not face the father of the atomic bomb. It is expected to gross roughly $24 million in its first weekend.
Killers Of The Flower Moon is scheduled to debut at No. 2 behind The Eras Tour concert film, which is predicted to earn $32 million in its second weekend. This comes after a record-breaking first weekend that earned the singer the best opening weekend for a concert film ever, with $97 million domestically and $123.5 million worldwide.
The expectations for Scorsese’s next film aren’t high, especially given its projected $200 million production budget, although Flower Moon does run three hours and 26 minutes and depicts the narrative of the Osage murders in the 1920s. The film outlasts other long blockbusters such as Avatar: The Way Of Water (3 hours and 12 minutes) and Avengers: Endgame (3 hours and 2 minutes). Furthermore, while Scorsese’s film will be accessible to watch with an Apple TV+ subscription at some point, the service has yet to announce an official at-home release date.
Killers Of The Flower Moon may perform below expectations due to the film’s release during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro were prevented from promoting the film as the actors union continues to picket Hollywood studios in the hopes of fair recompense in the streaming era. The cast also includes Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser, who would have ordinarily participated in a press tour to promote the Hollywood release.
Despite a number of variables working against Flower Moon, critics appear to appreciate Scorsese’s latest picture, with CinemaBlend’s own Killers of the Flower Moon review giving the film a flawless five out of five stars. Martin Scorsese has been working on the new film since 2017, and it has been a long-time passion project of his.
